First Defense: Help You Fight Off Colds
Everybody Hates Having A Cold
You get sniffles and sneezes, or perhaps a sore throat and annoying cough. The common
cold catches all of us from time to time. Everybody hates it.
"It hurts to breathe through my nose. Dang! I hate having a cold!"
"My nose is so red and puffy "
"I can just tell that it's going to be a long night of sleeplessness. Ugh, my throat."
"Sore throat is the worst feeling in the world. I can barely function."
"You have to blow your nose all the time that your nose gets red and raw from the tissues."
"Stuffy nose makes my head feel horrible."
"My head is stopped up, my throat hurts and I can barely talk, my voice goes all
squeaky."
"Stuffy noses drive me up the wall."
"Sore throat...yuck... when you can't swallow, it is so bad."
Cold symptoms usually begin 2 to 3 days after you become infected with a cold virus. The
first signs often include sniffling, sneezing, a scratchy throat, and runny nose.
After 1 to 3 days of initial symptoms, the secretions from the nose may become thicker.
You may develop a cough, hoarseness, headache, tiredness and achiness.
Different from colds, flu is an acute respiratory infection caused by a variety of flu
viruses. While flu symptoms often mimic a cold, they are usually more sever and
accompanied with a fever.
The Common Cold is Too Common
There are more than 200 different types of viruses known to cause the cold symptoms, but
about half of the time a cold is caused by a class of viruses called rhinoviruses. More
than 100 different rhinoviruses can infiltrate the protective lining of the nose and
throat, triggering an immune system reaction.
Because so many different viruses can cause a cold and because new cold viruses
constantly develop, the body never builds up resistance against all of them. For this
reason, colds are a common and recurring problem.
In fact, children in preschool and elementary school can have 3 to 12 colds per year
while adolescents and adults typically have 2 to 4 colds per year.
Colds are most contagious during the first 2 to 4 days after symptoms appear, and may be
contagious for up to 3 weeks. Your can catch a cold from person-to-person contact or by
breathing in virus particles spread through the air by sneezing or coughing.
The common cold is the most frequently occurring illness in the world, and it is a
leading cause of doctor visits and the most cited reasons for missed days from school and
work.

The Symptoms are the Signs of Immune System Fighting Hard
When infected by the virus, the body’s immune system opens up blood vessels through
inflammation and also increases fluid and mucus secretions. These two processes give you
the runny nose and the stuffy feeling.
Mucus are fluid are part of the protective design of our immune system. Our tears and
mucus contain an enzyme called lysozyme. This enzyme breaks down the cell wall of many
bacteria and viruses.
Our nasal passage and lungs are coated in mucus. Mast cells also line the nasal passages,
throat, lungs and skin. Any bacteria or virus that wants to gain entry to your body must
first make it past these defenses of our immune systems.
If the virus makes it into the cells lining of the lungs, the immune system will also
activate cough reflexes, secreting fluid and mucus.
As the immune system gears up over several days and fights the virus, the mucus thickens
and changes color. It is because the virus has been trapped in the mucus and turned into
dead cells. This is the phlegm you cough up. Eventually, the immune system eliminates
the virus completely and you are well again!
Other Major Components of the Immune System
Once inside the body, a pathogen has to deal with the immune system at a different level.
These other components of the immune system are: thymus, spleen, lymph system, bone marrow, white blood cells,
antibodies, complement system, and hormones.
We have a very sophisticated, beautifully designed immune system that works for us and
protects us well, if we only provide it with a favorable environment to do its work.
The Concerns of Common Cold Medicine
Although it has long been said that there is no cure for the common cold, sufferers seem
willing to try anything from cough suppressants, antihistamines, asthma drugs, pain
killers, to antibiotics.
Because a cold is caused by a virus, it cannot be cured by medication. Cold medicine may
help suppress symptoms, but the cold virus continues to wreck havoc inside the body.
Cold medicines usually contain several chemicals that cause unwanted side effects. These
may include high blood pressure (especially dangerous for people with heart disease,
diabetes or thyroid disease), disorientation, nervousness, dry mouth, constipation,
ringing in the ears, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, or upset stomach. You should take
them with care.
Many people who see doctors for treatment of the common cold are unnecessarily given
prescription of antibiotics. Since cold and flu are caused by viruses, they cannot be
cured by antibiotics. Antibiotics, when used incorrectly, can seriously damage the body's
immune system.
Nip It in the Bud by Giving Your Immune System a Helping Hand
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), external pathogens can invade the human
body only if a person’s immune system is temporarily down or in a chronic weakness mode.
So the focus of treatment should be to strengthen the immune system in the first
place.
Use First Defense to nip the cold in the bud as soon as the first symptoms arise. First
Defense works, because it operates on the level of your immune systems.

It started off with a sore throat, then a runny nose, then headaches. My nose got red and raw because of
constant blowing. It was a nightmare all over again. Fortunately my friend gave me something called First Defense.
Although she said to take it 3 times a day and see results in 2-3 days, I took it every two hours and with
double doses anyway just to get it over more quickly (Yes, you can say that I am a bit impatient by nature).
By the end of the day, I had snapped out of the cold. I was overly delighted. Now I usually have a few boxes
at home just in case anyone needs it. ~ Maria, Illinois

What is First Defense?
First documented use by the Chinese in 1624 A.D. and proven over hundreds of years since,
the First Defense is a TCM herbal formula highly
effective in helping your immune system fight off the pathogens. It quickly clears the cold symptoms,
particularly when taken early at the onset.
According to modern pharmacological research in China, First Defense works, because it
has a detoxifying and immune strengthening effect. It is anti-viral, anti-inflammatory,
analgesic, and anti-pyretic.
It is best to expel and clear the cold or flu as early as possible before it can move
into the energy channels and penetrate deeper into the organs. If you use First Defense
every early at the first sign of a cold, you can expect to see good results on the first
or second day.
There are two types of First Defense to choose from, depending on what type of cold you
have.
I. For the Inflammatory Type (Involving Sore Throat)
First Defense (green box) is mainly used for "inflammatory pattern / wind-heat pattern" of
cold. Wind-heat pattern of cold is caused by excessive external pathogen attack, and is
characterized the following symptoms:
- runny or congested nose;
- sneezing;
- scratchy or sore throat;
- itchy eyes;
- headache;
- rapid pulse;
- reddish tongue tip;
- fever
Ingredients in the First Defense for wind-heat pattern
To fight off wind-heat (inflammatory) pattern of a cold, the principle is to detoxify the
toxic flare-up caused by the excessive external pathogen attack.
The formula of First Defense (wind-heat pattern) includes seven herbs that work in a synergetic
fashion to clear the toxins from your system. For detailed information of each of the seven herbs, consult a
textbook called "Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica" Revised Edition by Dan Bensky & Andrew Gamble. But
following is the summary of each herb’s actions:
- 1. Perilla leaf (Zi Su Ye)

II. For the Deficiency Type (Absence of Sore Throat)
First Defense (orange color) is mainly used for "deficiency pattern / wind-cold pattern"
of a cold. The "wind-cold pattern" of cold is caused by deficiency in immune system's
resistance power,
and is characterized by following symptoms:
- clear running-nose;
- chills;
- pale complexion;
- a tight pulse;
- absence of sore throat or fever
Characteristic of First Defense (wind-cold pattern):
- works gently and evenly;
- used only in the very early stage of a cold;
- used to prevent the onset of colds during the epidemic season;
- used for aged and weak people and children who catch a wind-cold;
- can be combined with Defense Power (see below) for extra protection
Ingredients in the First Defense for wind-cold pattern
To fight off wind-cold pattern of a cold, the principle is to strengthen your immune systems.
The formula of First Defense (wind-cold pattern) includes six herbs that work in a synergetic
fashion to strengthen your immune system's resistance power. For detailed information of each
of the seven herbs, please review "Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica." Following is
the summary of each herb’s actions:
- 1. Chinese thoroughwax root (Chai Hu):

- warms the middle burner: for treating cold in the Stomach channel;
- stops coughing: for treating coughing due to both acute wind-cold patterns and chronic Lung channel disorders with phlegm;
- adjusts the protective Qi in those suffering from a weak physical condition.
III. Combination Type
If you have difficulty differentiating between wind-cold or wind-heat type, you can take
both types of granule in a combination.
Cautions
If your mucus is very thick and its color gets very dark or greenish, it may be a sign of
a bacterial, rather than viral, infection. In that case, you should consult your
physician, as antibiotics may be in order.
It is important to differentiate between a flu and a common cold. The flu symptoms are
usually more severe. Of particular concern is that the flu may develop into serious
illness, such as bronchitis, or pneumonia. You must consult your physician if your
symptoms indicate a flu.
How to Take First Defense
Dosage
One packet each time, 3 times per day. Do not skip. For the very first dose, you may take
2 packets. You may even take additional dose as needed.
In case of an acute cold, you may take as many frequent doses as necessary, such as every 20
minutes,
until your symptoms improve. It is impossible to overdose because should you take more than you need,
your body will safely eliminate the excess.
Drink at warm temperature. Doses can be consumed at any time of the day or evening. Lemon
juice or honey may be added to enhance the taste.
Continue taking for three days or until your symptoms are gone. If you do not see
improvements after three days, you may have other health conditions. In that case,
consult your physician.
Do not take together with pharmaceutical drugs. Allow at least a two-hour interval.
For children under 12, reduce the dosage according to age from ½ to 1/6 a packet.
* Tips: To prevent from getting a cold or flu in the first place, take Ivy's Amla
once a day. It will keep you away from much unneceaary suffering from various ailments and expenses on remedies.
Preparation
Do not heat up your First Defense in microwave. It will nullify its effect.
Pour one or two packets of First Defense granule in a non-reactive cup. Put side.
Bring 1 cup of pure water to a near boil Pour the hot water over granule. Cover and let
dissolve. Wait until the liquid reaches a warm drinking temperature.
Stir before drinking, so no residue is left in the bottom. Drink while still warm.
If you are combining two formulas together, they may both be placed in one non-reactive
cup.
If you don't have access to hot water during the day, you can make an extra cup of the decoction
to carry with you for the day.
The Benefit of Granule Decoction
Boiling dry, unprocessed herbs is the truly traditional way of taking Traditional Chinese
Medicine; it is most effective. However, it is time-consuming, burdensome to prepare,
and the taste may be unpleasant to many people.
Granule teas are the next best option with regard to effectiveness. Granule teas are
decocted from whole roots, stems, and leaves. They are easy to prepare and they come in
individual foil packs which may be conveniently taken along anywhere. They only require
some hot water to be instantaneously ready to be taken. In addition, they taste and smell
much better.

Some people seem to be able to keep going when they get a cold, but my symptoms usually start out mild
(stuffy or runny nose, headache, fatigue) and then progress into a severe cold with a sinus infection
that lays me flat for days! I was hopeful that there might be some product that could keep my colds from
getting so severe, but I admit I was also skeptical when I first learned about First Defense.
The first time I used it was one year ago when I felt a cold coming on, I used both wind-cold and wind-heat types
for just several days and the cold never materialized! Since then I have been vigilant to take First Defense
at the first sign of a cold.
I am grateful to say that I have not had a severe cold or a sinus infection in over a year since the first use
of First Defense, and I am not as worried about the approaching cold season this year! ~ Vicki, Illinois
